The simple JOY of giving is something that many of us have lost
sight of. I say us, because this is something that I personally
struggle with. My desire to give and make a difference
sometimes takes my focus off the fact that I’m giving what I can
and makes my spirit restless and indifferent. The
discouragement of it all will sometimes consume me. When I tell
people to do what they can, where they are and not feel guilty it’
s usually a reminder to my heart as well. Our problem is that we
are focused on what we can’t do, what we don’t have and how
we feel about that. In short, we have an “I” problem. If we would
truly focus on others, the “I” problem shrinks and our heart for
others would swell and simply take over.
When we are spreading joy and doing for others without thought
of the size of the gift, the value of it or any of other things that
would distract us, then we are doing more than spreading joy;
we are giving hope.
You’ve heard it and have probably even said it “I’m sorry I can’t
do more.” We all tend to feel so guilty because we want to do
more and don’t have the resources. If you are giving and doing
what you can, it makes sense to remember that when the
resources increase, you’ll continue to do what you’ve always
done but on a greater level. Many people refuse to even try
because they get consumed with the notion that their little bit doesn’t matter. It matters, and matters a lot!
Let’s look at the impact a small gift will have. Many of us can spare $10.00 a month. With social media giving
us a worldwide reach, 500 of us could easily donate $10 a month to Spreading Joy. That would be $5,000 a
month and $60,000 a year. All because of a simple, “small looking” gift of $10.00. Can you imagine the school
supplies we could help out with? Can you imagine the Christmas JOY that could be given? Can you imagine
the scholarships we could start, the training we could do for battered women or the community centers that
would be stared and focused on making a difference for others? Standing alone, we feel pretty weak but
together, we can make a huge difference.
The important thing in Spreading Joy is to simply get yourself in the habit of making a difference. Doing
something daily for someone for 30 days is the best way to get your mind looking for the opportunities that
surround you each day. Giving and doing for family, friends and even people you pass will have more of an
impact on YOUR heart than you’ll realize. Your heart will smile more, your mood will be positively contagious
and soon, others will be spreading joy all because you decided to just go for it and make a difference.
HOPE! Hope is such a powerful thing in this day that we live.
